Choose from a late morning or afternoon tour according to your schedule. Make your way to The Lane Vineyard by taxi or car. It's located just a 20-minute drive from Adelaide, and under two miles (three km) from the historic village of Hahndorf.
Upon arrival, your host from The Lane Vineyard meets you at the winery’s tasting room (or cellar door as it's known in Australia). Your host starts your guided tour with an overview of the winemaking process at The Lane Vineyard, which specializes in small-batch single vineyard wines.
Started in 1993 by John and Helen Edwards, the family-run winery’s 2005 makeover resulted in a state-of-the-art winery equipped with the latest technology. Your host shows you around the winery and vineyards, where the grapes are harvested during the cool of evening and delivered to the winery’s doors just 100 feet (300 meters) away.
After a leisurely walk around the vineyard, stop at a scenic outdoor patio for your wine tasting. Sample a selection of Occasion Wines, including a cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, shiraz, and sauvignon semillon. Then choose your favorite for a vertical tasting, in which you sample one varietal over several vintages and compare how the wine's flavor varies in different years.
Throughout the day, your host shares informative commentary about the wines and the history of The Lane Vineyard.
After about 1.5 hours, your tasting tour ends at the cellar door. Linger to enjoy the winery or make your own way back to Adelaide. If you worked up an appetite, the winery's elegant restaurant has a variety of food you can purchase, and spectacular views from the windows and deck. Reservations for the restaurant are recommended, especially on weekends when they fill up fast.
And don't worry about how you'll get back after a couple glasses of wine, taxi service can be easily arranged.
