You will be picked up by an experienced driver guide at your hotel or Guesthouse for an 8-9 hour tour of the beautiful area of Landmannalaugar and the volcano Hekla.
The tour kicks off in Reykjavik aboard a special 'super-Jeep'. First you'll see the fertile farm lands in the South before moving on to epic views of Hekla’s snow-covered peak. You might have heard the name - it is Iceland’s most famous active volcano. The last eruption was in February of 2000, and has erupted some other 20 times since the ninth century. Hekla was notorious in medieval Europe as it was believed to be the entrance to hell. If weather allows, you will also drive on the ridge of the volcano, rising amost 3000 feet above sea level for an amazing view. At the base of the volcano, you will drive through intensely rugged mountain terrain, past lava fields and craters.
As you move on from Hekla, you will make make your way to Landmannalaugar and swing by the explosion crater on the way. You'll then stop in Ljótipollur for a coffee and lunch break at Landmannalaugar. Here you will have to opportunity to go for a 1-2 hour hike to explore Iceland’s interior paradise, a treat for geology enthusiasts and hikers alike, or a dip in the natural hot pool.
From there, you will make your way down Thjorsardalur (Þjórsárdalur) to the last stop, Hjalparfoss (Hjálparfoss) waterfall, before returning to Reykjavík where you will be dropped off at your Hotel or Guest House.
