Experience the awe and majesty of Argentina’s Lanín volcano on this full-day guided hiking tour, departing from San Martin de los Andes. An experienced guide leads you up this geologic wonder and informs you about the volcanic region along the ascent. At the top, you’re rewarded with unrivaled views of other mountains, valleys and volcanoes in the Neuquén province that extend for miles across the horizon. Nature and adventure buffs won’t want to miss this small-group tour, limited to 12 people.
Your 11-hour journey to the tip of the Lanín volcano begins with a convenient pickup at your San Martin de los Andes hotel. Meet your guide and get ready to ascend one of Argentina’s most stunning natural landmarks. Lanín is not just a pretty face — its ice-capped cone is the symbol of the Neuquén province, located north of Patagonia. This stratovolcano is so large that it stretches from Lanín National Park in Argentina to Villarrica National Park in Chile.
Listen closely as your guide speaks about what to expect from this medium- to difficult-level hike. From the base of the volcano, trek further through a forest until you reach a creek, signifying you’re close to a trailhead. Beyond the forest, the terrain becomes volcanic, with loose rocks common on your ascent. With each step, you're rewarded with greater views as you make your way up this icy beast.
Take a break for lunch (bring your own) halfway up the volcano. As you rest, your guide explains the local lore of the volcano, and tells about its fascinating geologic history.
Then continue through Espina de Pescado, reaching 8,038 feet (2,450 meters) above sea level for the best views of the hike. See dozens of volcanos and mountain peaks reaching to the sky in the distance. Admire the oasis of Lake Tromen, along with picturesque valleys and forests. Far off in the distance, you can even see the Llaima volcano of Patagonia.
Once you've taken it all in and snapped some memorable photos, begin your descent back down the volcano, and relax on the ride back to your hotel to celebrate completing your successful adventure.
