Experience the surreal landscapes around Lake Mývatn on a guided day trip from Akureyri. Marvel at the magnificent features of North Iceland’s volcanic countryside, including the famous Goðafoss waterfall, the unique lava stacks at Dimmuborgir and the 300-meter-wide Víti explosion crater. Dine at a local restaurant and let your stress melt away in the relaxing geothermal water of Mývatn Nature Baths. In winter, hunt for the Northern Lights and in summer, look out for the midnight sun.
Meet your local guide at your Akureyri hotel at lunchtime, and then set off in a comfortable minivan to explore the incredible countryside of Northern Iceland. The area around Lake Mývatn is full of natural wonders, from desolate craters and coagulated lava fields to warm geothermal pools and steaming vents.
Stop first at the Goðafoss waterfall, where sheets of water crash down across a 30-meter-wide cliff. After taking in the dramatic view, continue on to Dimmuborgir, an area peppered with jagged lava formations and towering rock pillars that were created by an eruption about 2,000 years ago.
Next, witness even more amazing geological and geothermal wonders including the warm underground river at the Grjótagjá rift, the Víti explosion crater and the bubbling mud pools and sulphur pits of Hverir.
Break for dinner at a local restaurant, where you can choose from a fish, meat or vegetarian option. After dinner, don your bathing suit for a dip in the soothing Mývatn Nature Baths, which are surrounded by lava fields.
Head back onto the road and look to the skies. What you see depends on the time of the year: In summer, long daytime hours illuminate the area’s natural beauty and if the sky is clear, you can witness the midnight sun. Because of the region’s high latitude, the sun never sets, barely skimming the horizon during the summer months. In winter, drive into the dark of the night to try and seek out the colorful display of the elusive Northern Lights.
Afterward, head back to Akureyri, where you’ll be dropped off at your hotel.
