Lake Bled Half Day Excursion from Ljubljana
Ljubljana, Slovenia
Trip Type: Half-day Tours
Duration: 5 hours
The site of today's Lake Bled was once a tectonic basin, later carved by a glacier that on its way encountered an obstacle - a huge rock on which it scrubbed and brushed so long that all was left is what we call today “the island of Lake bled”. The ice melted, the valley was flooded by water and the resultant is 2.12 km long and up to 1.30 km wide lake – a crystal-blue marvel.

With its emerald-green waters, picture perfect postcard church on the island, a medieval castle on the rocky cliff and some of the highest peaks of the Slovenian Alps as the background. Lake Bled is a place you should not miss. Take a short walk along the lake shore. The beauty of the surrounding mountains reflects on the lake surface. Throrought the seasons visitors will enjoy the peace of the lake and fresh air.
Perched atop a steep cliff more than 100m above the lake, Bled Castle is how most people imagine a medieval fortress to be, with towers, ramparts, moats and a terrace offering magnificent views. The castle houses a unique treasure - a reconstructed Gutenberg's wooden printing press on which the master printer will demonstrate old printing techniques using hand-made paper.
From the lake shore where you can take the 'pletna' boat to the lake island. The tiny, tear-shaped island beckons from the shore and the ride with the 'pletna' boat is a real thrill.
Upon returning from the island you will probably be tired. Stop at the local patisserie and taste Bled’s famous cream cake – kremšnita. Since the last 60 years have sold as many as 12 million cream cakes. Try it yourself!
