Meet at a marine gear shop in La Jolla, where your guide helps you get fitted for equipment for your moderately active morning or afternoon tour. Then stroll down about three blocks to La Jolla Cove Beach, where you'll learn the techniques of sea kayaking and snorkeling from your experienced guide, trained as a marine biologist or naturalist.
Get settled in your single or tandem kayak, trying out paddling strokes in tranquil La Jolla Cove before exploring La Jolla Caves — large fissures in the surrounding sandstone cliffs. Keep your eyes open for harbor seals, dolphins and sea lions frolicking in the waves of the protected La Jolla Ecological Reserve. Paddle to sea caves like Sunny Jim’s Cave, the Arch Cave and the Clams’ Cave, then don your snorkel gear before leaping into the clear blue waters for a closer look at the marine life. If conditions permit, swim into the caves themselves!
