Discover the true beauty of Ireland on this fantastic day trip to the monastic site of Glendalough and the city colourful Kilkenny, the medieval capital of Ireland.Depart Dublin at 9am in the morning and begin the day by traveling south, beginning the journey into County Wicklow. Pass through outstanding countryside in the Wicklow mountains, most notably the Sugar Loaf Mountains, as you sit back and relax on your way to Glendalough.
Glendalough is one of the most striking parts of Ireland with magnificent scenery and a rich history. There will be time to explore the old monastic city, featuring St. Kevin's Cross and the 10th century round tour. Walk along river banks and pass through woods leading to lakes, waterfalls and brooks.
Then travel over the Wicklow Gap, taking you way up into the Wicklow Mountains. Experience panoramic views of the landscape, stretching as far as the eye can see. Observe traditional Irish bogs, which provide the nearby Irish residents with a source of energy to fuel fires. Through the Wicklow Gap, you will also pass Turlogh waterfall, one of Ireland's most dramatic waterfalls and highest reservoir.
From here, arrive in Kilkenny city, the medieval capital of Ireland back in the 11th century. Situated on the banks of the river Nore, you will have a chance to walk the windy, cobblestone streets and see the gardens of the famous Norman Castle. Consider venturing inside to take a tour of its palatial interior for a small optional fee. You have plenty of time to wander the streets and visit the Black Abbey or experience the Cathedral of Saint Canice with its famous round tower. With two hours free, there is also time to enjoy a relaxed lunch or maybe try a pint of Kilkenny in Kilkennyn (own expense).
You will arrive back in Dublin at about 6pm after a drive through the County of Kildare.
