After port pickup in Ketchikan, take a 5-mile (8-km) drive northwest to the Seacycle float house on Ward Cove. Upon arrival, receive a safety briefing and overview from your experienced guide, who will then outfit you with the equipment and gear you need for your outing on the water. Seacycles are easy to maneuver — a cross between a kayak, a paddleboat and a bike. The stable, leg-powered vessel gives you a vantage point above the water’s surface and keeps your hands free, allowing you to soak up views and click away with your camera.
When you’re ready, pedal off and follow your guide’s lead into a wildlife estuary. With the woods of Tongass National Forest surrounding you, keep your eyes peeled for eagles, seals and otters. Curious ducks may sidle up to your Seacycle. You might even spot a bear pawing at the water for salmon.
As you pedal through Ward Cove, catch sight of relics from the industries that have supported Alaska through the years, such as tools of crab business. Throughout your tour, your Alaska-loving guide shares insight into the state’s natural history and outdoor culture.
After about an hour and 45 minutes on the water, pedal back to the float house for a satisfying picnic. Your tour ends with return to Ketchikan for drop-off at the port.
