Your adventure in Ketchikan begins with a scenic coach ride to a secluded mountain lake, where you will board a Native American–style canoe. These fast, stable and easy-to-maneuver canoes are 37 feet (11 meters ) long and comfortably seat 20 passengers. Paddle under the direction of an experienced guide, scan the shore for wildlife and learn about the unique Native American history of the Ketchikan area. The lake is ideal for canoeing and is surrounded by the lush Tongass National Forest, the largest national forest in the US.
Stop on shore for a Native American–style snack, including smoked fish, clam chowder, bread rolls with wild berry jams and beverages. After refueling, your knowledgeable guide will lead you on a short nature walk highlighting the interesting vegetation and wildlife of the rain forest. Spot a carnivorous plant, the sundew, which uses tentacles with an adhesive 'dew' to ensnare small insects! Then, paddle back to the canoe dock and board your coach for a relaxing drive back to your hotel.
This adventure is a rare opportunity to explore Southeast Alaska just like the original explorers did!
