Pack your windstopper, you’re going to the blustery Karst. After a drive to Sežana, you’ll hop on your bikes and ride on a remote road, away from the busy city-life and through a beautiful landscape to the Vilenica Cave, that welcomed first tourist as early as the 17th century.
From one natural wonder to another; your next stop will take place in the village of Lokev, which may at first appear to be just another settlement, but soon turns out to be so much more. An early Renaissance defense tower in the village and a prehistoric fort nearby show this area’s rich history, which you will have a chance to discuss when stopping to try Karst’s most mouth-watering delicacy - prosciutto. With its distinct taste of salty pork meat, dried in this windswept area for many months, it encompasses everything this area is strong, intense and full of character. The same can be said of Lipizzaner horses, which you will see on your walk through the stud farm of Lipica.
Back on your bike and you’ll be cycling over the border to Italy and to a slightly darker side. You will stop in Bazovica, a center of national community of Slovenians in Italy, a historical mark of battling fascism. A plunge into history, a stroll through the battles of World Wars, and moments later you will be pleasantly distracted by an impressive view of Trieste Gulf. Slowly, your adventure will be approaching its end. Another calm ride through the forests, a few more unique Karst phenomena to observe on the way, and you’ll be back where you started, in Sežana.
