Get to know the Jewish districts of Kazimierz and Podgórze on this 3-hour walking tour of Krakow. Led by a knowledgeable local guide, the tour is packed with interesting commentary about the history of Krakow’s Jewish community from the Middle Ages through to the present day. Stroll through Krakow Old Town; learn about Oskar Schindler among other wartime heroes; and explore Kazimierz and Podgórze to visit the Tempel and Remuh synagogues, the Old Jewish Cemetery, cultural centers and more.
Meet your guide in Krakow Old Town, and start with an introduction to the city’s Jewish history. The Jewish community’s culture is evident around Krakow, although no more so than in the Old Town and the Jewish districts of Kazimierz and Podgórze.
As you walk from the Old Town to Podgórze, learn about the district during the days of the Holocaust, when European Jews were persecuted at the hands of the Nazis. Visit the memorial to those who perished during WWII, and hear of the heroes who risked their lives to save others such as Oskar Schindler.
From Podgórze, follow the banks of the Vistula River to Kazimierz, which once had a population of some 65,000 Jews. Visit Tempel Synagogue where the pre-war wealth of the area is evident, and then step inside the tiny-yet-beautiful Remuh Synagogue, that remains an active place of worship today.
Take a break for a coffee and a Polish dessert, and chat about tips for places to see. Resume with a stroll around the Old Jewish Cemetery. Hear about the notable Jews who were buried at the site, and visit other must-see spots around Kazimierz such as the Old Synagogue and Isaac’s Synagogue, plus various kosher shops and cultural centers.
After three hours, your tour ends in Kazimierz close to public transport links. Feel free to ask the guides for directions.
