During the winter in Greenland, the snow and ice cover the trails in the popular hiking routes, offering an unbeatable scenery. The most safe and comfortable way to hike in these conditions is using a pair of snowshoes and with a local guide that knows the area. Our tour starts ascending between walls covered with snow and thick ice we reach a view point from where we enjoy the magnified panorama of the “dogs sledge highway”. After a small break to refresh and take some pictures, we descent to the frozen lake and the river bank to put our feet in a UNESCO World Heritage Site: the Kangia Icefjord. This unique natural phenomenon pushes out 20 million tons of ice every day, in form of gigantic icebergs that rise more than 100 meters above the sea level.

Our tour uses as a reference the summer blue route from the Quarry passing through a dramatic cleft. After 1 hour ascending between walls covered with snow and thick ice we will reach a view point from where we will enjoy the magnified panorama of the “dogs sledge highway”. After a small break to refresh and take some pictures, we will descent to the frozen lake and the path downhill to the river bank to put our feet in the world famous fjord Kangia and its 20 million tons of ice flowing out each day which results in gigantic icebergs that rise more than 100 meters into the air.

From that point we will follow all the rocky coast of the icefjord, passing by Holmens Bakke, the famous spot where every 13th of January, the inhabitants of Ilulissat celebrate the sun appearing on the horizon after 6 weeks of absence. The view of the breathtaking Icefjord from there is one you will never forget!

Finally our walk will stop at the abandoned settlement Sermermiut where for the last 4.000 years several different Inuit cultures have lived and left interesting remains. After a full day out in the beautiful nature we return to Ilulissat and spend the night in our accommodation.

No previous experience is required, and everybody can learn how to move safely into the winter terrain with the snowshoes.
