After pickup from your Akureyri hotel, travel in an air-conditioned minibus to Lake Mývatn, a shallow lake with a diverse bird life population.
Drive toward the volcanic area of Gjástykki. Located just 3.1 miles (5 kilometers) north of the active Krafla volcano, the landscape of Gjástykki has been carved by volcanic eruptions. It lies on the boundary between two tectonic plates and volcanic activity is prevalent.
Get a close-up look at slag, a volcanic rock that was spewed up during eruptions and feel the hot steam rising from cracks on the Earth’s surface. While you encounter these geological formations, discover more about them from your expert guide. Got a question? Go ahead and ask; this small-group tour ensures you receive personalized attention.
After a 30-minute break for refreshments (own expense), head back to the minivan. Drive past Hverfell volcano, through the dramatic crater row of Lúdentarborgir and toward the base of Mt Hvannfell. Disembark from the minivan and trek across the moon-like terrain of a lava field.
Get kitted up with special cave exploration equipment, and then descend into the darkness of the Lofthellir lava cave. Venture down to the mysterious depths, wander through the various chambers and look out for unusual ice and rock formations.
After an hour or so of exploration, emerge back out into the open and make your way back to the minivan. Stop at Reykjahlið village and grab a bite to eat (own expense), then settle into your seat for the journey back to Akureyri. At the end of the tour, you’ll be dropped off at your hotel.
