Hawaiian dance, hula, is the true dance of our Hawaiian culture. It embodies Hawaiian beliefs and joys of life. Learn the hula and mele (song) in the garden setting of the Hilton Waikiki Beach Hotel. You will arrive in the lobby of the Hilton Waikiki Beach Hotel. Your hula guides will take you through the lobby to the garden outdoors.
Only female students will be given a hula skirt (made of cloth) to slip over their shorts, pants, skirt, or dress. Male students may decide to learn to play the 'ukulele (instrument) or remain with the group to dance hula. Our hula teacher will give instructions about where to stand and the general positions of feet and hands. You will learn a song about Waikiki and dance to the music. Those who are learning to play the 'ukulele will learn the same Waikiki song.
Hula is a form of storytelling. Through dance and music, you will know more about Waikiki. Once you learn the hula and its song, you will perform with your hula friends accompanied by the students who learned to play the 'ukulele.Your friends and family may videotape your performance. Should you want to take home your hula skirt or 'ukulele, you may purchase them from the hula guide. After the session, your hula guide will walk you back to the lobby and wish you "a hui hou", to return and see you again. If you joined on a Friday, you may return on Saturday for a refresher class.
