The Old Croton Aqueduct was built in the mid 19th century to carry water to New York City after a few devastating fires revealed that the city did not have adequate access to water resources. And now you can explore it via bicycle starting in Dobbs Ferry, as you pedal your way up along the Hudson River.
Hop on a bicycle for this do-it-yourself ride up the historic Aqueduct Trail. Cruise out of Dobbs Ferry and follow the trail, which goes north along the Hudson. Linger in the historic and charming towns of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow. Take a coffee break in one of the atmospheric cafes or stop to eat a sandwich. Even better, pick up some food to eat in Irvington right on the waterfront overlooking the Hudson River (food not included in rental price).
Adventurous bicyclists can pedal all the way up to the Old Croton Dam, a 35-mile journey round trip, but a ride of 5 or 10 miles will introduce you to the beautiful area just north of New York City.
