From the pines you emerge into an open meadow at 4200ft in elevation with majestic 30 mile views out to the Blue Ridge Parkway. You will think you are in the legendary movies "Sound of Music." Along the way you may even witness some eagles soaring above.
Upon descending from the top you travel through an old youth camp. The Old Fort Lodge is still used for all sorts of activities, parties, weddings, and special events.
There is years of history in that friendly old lodge. Every year we have old campers returning to search out their memorial plaque they created and explore their old stomping grounds. Many of them bring their children and grandchildren. The youth camp was established in 1960 and closed in 1976 due to extensive health problems for Mr. Sellers at the time. Don't worry he fully recovered and opened up the Stables to the public 1983. Now you're on the home stretch to the Stables at 3800ft.
