At the end of the trip, be surprised by a wonderful view of the city lights of the high rises of Tai Po and Ma On Shan new towns. After pick up at Fanling MTR station we take a taxi to the starting point of the hike, near Hok Tau reservoir. Here we walk first along a paved road to the dam of the reservoir. This is prime bat habitat, many bat calls can be received and made audible by a specialized bat detector. With a little luck we can see these masters of the night sky fly by as they hunt for insects.
From the reservoir the route continues over well maintained dirt paths to the abandoned village of Sha Lo Tung, a wetland area and major firefly habitat. Enjoy the many lights of the fireflies as they flash their lights, attempting to attract a mate.Near the end of the walk we'll have a great view over Tai Po and Ma On Shan new towns (weather permitting) before descending the mountain along a long flight of steps and catching transport back to the MTR station.
