Your tour to the emblematic monuments of this part of the town will be guided by a former university student integrated in this project, developed at the University of Madeira. This will be a university project with a solidary side that will most certainly fascinate you.Right at the city’s heart, we present you the old medieval borough. In this tour around the historic part of the town, we will walk through gastronomy and contemporary buildings such as the Farmers’ Market. We then continue walking from Rua de Santa Maria where carpentry shops from the Golden Age of Sugar were cause for hustle and bustle, to Campo Almirante Reis, a field that was used for many different purposes and had many names throughout the centuries. The fortress of St James, built during the Philippine dominium, will give us a perspective of the defences of our island, a place that throughout the centuries was attacked many times by corsairs and pirates. We will pass by the Chapel of the Holy Body, where the primal hermitage was erected in the late 15th century, to admire beautiful pieces of Portuguese Art and upon returning to the emblematic Rua de Santa Maria, we will get to see the artistic interventions suffered by that urban centre.
