This 2 hour walking tour winds its way through the streets of the French Quarter and the area South of Broad Street in the heart of Charleston's Historic District. Get to know the historic churches, horticulture, unique architecture and story of our beautiful city from its beginning settlers to the friendly residents of today. This tour provides a good, broad overview of Charleston's past and is a good starting point for visitors to Charleston.The tour starts at 45 Pinckney Street. From there the tour will point out several landmarks in the heart of the Historic District including, but not limited to, The Slave Mart Museum; Chalmers Street -- also known as Labor Lane.... where women did and still do induce labor by going up on down this street; The Pink House, regarded as the oldest structure in Charleston, built in 1688; The Charleston Hatman on the corner of Broad and Church Streets; St. Michael's Alley featuring the Philip Simmons Cross and Egret Gate with information about Philip Simmons as well as about James Petigru's law office -- most brilliant legal mind in SC (as recognized by his peers) prior to the Civil War -- and the Clelia McGowan house who was the first woman to hold public office in SC and first to be elected to City Council, in 1923; St. Michael's Church, including inside of the Church if there's no special service or holiday; the 4 Corners of Law; Washington Square Park; the Dock Street Theater; the French Huguenot Church; St. Philip's Church burial grounds and John C. Calhoun's body which was moved during the Civil War; and Philadelphia Alley which has a history of duels and was featured in Darius Rucker's video to the “Come Back Song”.
