This is one of the most beautiful hikes that Iceland has to offer. The Hekla volcano is one of the worlds most active volcanoes and with it´s 1491meters one of the highest mountains on the south coast of Iceland.
Mt. Hekla is one of Iceland’s most active volcanoes and is known for its explosive eruptions. The last time it erupted was in 2000 and the next eruption is probably happening soon. The volcano is one of the biggest on the south coast with a height of 1491meters.
Your day will start with a pick up from your Hotel in Reykjavik between 8:00-8:30. From there we will drive along the south coast to the starting point of our hike. After about 1:45h in the car we are starting our hike up to the peak of the mountain. Depending on the season you can expect to have quite a bit of snow and ice. You will be provided with special equipment in case we need crampons or snow shoes. On the way to the top you will get to see rough lava fields while enjoying the view on the surrounding area. The approximate ascending time will be 3-4 hours and worth the effort. On clear days you can see all the way to Vatnajökull (Europe´s biggest glacier) and the mountains of Fjallabak.
