But there are many off-the-beaten-path parts of town most visitors don’t see. This 3-hour guided walking tour of the Hungarian capital does just that: takes you to the spots where locals linger and have fun.

Meet your guide at the prearranged location in the city center, and start off by learning about the history of the city while walking to the first destination. At one of the old ghettos that existed in World War II, hear the sad tales of the Jewish residents during the war. While there, visit Gozsdu courtyard, a spacious outdoor area crammed with shops and pubs. And don’t forget to get a glimpse of the first 'ruin bar,' pubs that were set up in abandoned, derelict buildings. Szimpla Kert first started pouring beer in 2001 and since then many ruin bars have popped up all over town.
After a break, explore Rakóczi Avenue, filled with cool cafes and shops and home to one of the oldest hospitals in Budapest, before moving on to the Palace Quarter where the guide shows evidence from the 1956 anti-Soviet uprising.
Your tour then concludes near Central Market Hall after three hours. By the end of your tour, you’ll know Budapest much better than before and you’ll have many places to return to.
