In August 2014, the Bárðarbunga volcano, located in a remote area of central Iceland, made its presence known. Imagine tidal waves of lava shooting 200 feet (60 meters) in the air, and a river of lava descending down the sides of a volcano, obliterating everything in its path. It's a sight you get to see during your unforgettable 3-hour helicopter flight over the active volcano.
Make your way to Reykjavik Domestic Airport, and be sure to be 30 minutes early for your stated departure. As you ascend into the sky with your professional pilot, peer down as the vibrant rooftops of Reykjavik give way to the rugged Icelandic countryside.
As you soar through the sky, learn about the geological history of Iceland and why there’s so much volcanic activity in this unique and wonderful place.
From the helicopter's big picture windows, witness the earth’s drama unfold in front of (and below) you; the glowing lava and the fiery madness conspiring to put on the best show on earth.
After roughly three hours, arrive back at Reykjavik Domestic Airport, where your experience concludes.
Please note: While the Bárðarbunga volcanic system has spewed record-breaking amounts of lava since it began erupting in August 2014, the intensity of the eruption cannot be guaranteed.
As of February 2015, the volcanic system was measured as eight times less active than when it first began erupting. Unfortunately, there is no way to predict the level of volcanic activity before taking off from Reykjavik. Should you book this tour, you must be willing to accept that the magma flow may have ceased.
Regardless of the volcanic activity, the area is of great interest. From your vantage point in the sky, you’ll be able to see the lava field produced by the eruption that now covers an area larger than the size of Manhattan.
