Harlem Gospel Wednesday Afternoon Tour
New York, New York
Trip Type: Literary, Art & Music Tours
Duration: 4 hours
An exciting afternoon discovery of Harlem from its foundation as a Dutch farming community to becoming the capital of Black America. From the Harlem Renaissance to the dark days of the 70’s to today’s real estate boom. Narrated in 2 languages (English and German or Italian and Spanish) the tour will include stops at Sugar Hill, Morningside Heights, Apollo Theater, Sylvan Terrace as well as other relevant points of the fabled neighborhood. Finally we will go to a Church and attend a true Gospel Mass.
We like to stress that the Mass may include a short sung portion and a multilingual sermon that someone could find lengthy at times. Wednesday functions are perhaps less ‘entertaining’ compared to the Sunday versions, but we want to remind you that it is a true Mass, not a musical show.

Harlem was founded in the second half of 1600 as a Dutch farming community. The settlement grew enormously during the first great wave of migration at the turn of the 19th Century. Between 1880 and 1920 large numbers of immigrants, especially Italians and Jews Russian arrived at Ellis Island and settled in New York. We have to remember two dates for the development of Harlem: 1863, when President Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery with an executive order and the financial crisis of 1904. Afro-American, real estate entrepreneur, Philip Peyton purchased through his Afro-American Realty Co. a row of tenements on 133rd. Street renting –against prejudice- to the newly emancipated black population. It was an enormous success, by 1913 there were over 60,000 African-American living in Harlem and more were coming to create the spiritual home of black America. The narration will go through Prohibition years, the Harlem Renaissance, the degradation of the 70s, the recent recovery in the 90s. This afternoon tour will take you to explore the historic district of Sugar Hill, Convent Avenue, Hamilton Grange, and Sylvan Terrace. We will see the Apollo Theatre, Hotel Theresa on 125th. Street and President Bill Clinton’s office. We will then go to a Baptist Church to attend a true Gospel Mass. The tour will end at the meeting point around 8:30 pm. The tour itinerary can be subject to changes due to unexpected traffic and weather conditions.
