In Somerset West, against the slopes of the Helderberg mountain overlooking False Bay you will find the Helderberg Nature Reserve. The Somerset West Rotary Club recognised that a nature reserve would benefit the community and therefore changed the initial flower garden into a reserve. On 3 October 1964 the Helderberg Nature Reserve officially opened. The reserve has an incredible plant diversity, it is also rich with fauna. Except for the Bontebok which relocated to Vergelegen Wine Estate, a number of animals such as Cape Hare, Common Duiker, Porcupines, Genets and Mongoose can be found here. The area also has a rich Birdlife with around 169 bird species being recorded in the area. The reserve is a paradise for the Bird Watching enthusiast.

There are four walking trails to explore namely; Sugarbird walk (2.2km), Caracal trail (4.4km), Protea trail (6.2km) and Leopard Loop (8.2km)

Please make sure you wear suitable shoes and clothing when hiking. It is also important to ensure you put on sunblock as the African sun can be harmful to your skin.

As many of our guests are not familiar with South Africa, your comfort and safety is first priority. Your experienced guides are always available to assist you in making your stay a good one.
