The temple complex houses the largest collection of Buddha images in Thailand, including a 46m long reclining Buddha. The temple was also the earliest center for public education in Thailand, and still houses a school of Thai medicine. It is known as the birthplace of traditional Thai massage which is still taught and practiced at the temple.
Finally, Wat Benchamabophit. Constructed in in 1899 at the request of King Chulalongkorn, the temple's name literally means the Temple of the fifth King. It was designed by Prince Naris, a half-brother of the king, and was built of Italian marble. It has a display of Carrara marble pillars, a marble courtyard with two large singhas (lions) guarding the entrance to the bot. The interiors are decorated with crossbeams of lacquer and gold.
