Spend a half day in a full-immersion tour in Herculaneum, a residential coastal town which has been superbly preserved by volcanic mud and ash during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. See the remains and skeletons of this town, which continues to be excavated even today.Visit the ancient town of Herculaneum, one of the lesser-known towns covered by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D., on a half-day tour from Sorrento. Walk through the archaeological site and see the many buildings that have been preserved for centuries, until the discovery in 1709.
Your tour begins with a morning departure from Sorrento. This excursion includes headsets that will be given to you by the guides on the coach during the journey. Once in Herculaneum, you will find your guide waiting for you at the entrance of the site to pay your entrance fees before beginning the tour. General admission is €11, but children under 18 and adults over 65 are free.
You will have the chance to view the ancient town from above before heading down and beginning the guided tour, which lasts about an hour. The buildings have been so well preserved that you can walk down the streets pretty much exactly as at the roman time more than 2,000 years ago! There are still original timbers showing in the buildings and clay pots stored as they would have been at the time of the eruption.
There are still well-preserved skeletons in Herculaneum, but it was believed that many of the inhabitants of the town managed to successfully flee, unlike those not so fortunate in Pompeii.
The tour will show you many of the most important points of interest, including the public baths with their frescoes and mosaics, the shops and the gymnasium and much more. An amazing trip in one of the world's best-preserved examples of a Roman residential town, brought to life by years of study and knowledge of local guides.
