Portugal’s first king, Afonso Henriques, chose this former Roman city to be the administrative capital of the Portuguese kingdom after his victory at the Battle of São Mamede in 1128. Known as the birthplace of the nation, Guimarães is a fascinating place to visit, with its proud castle and well-preserved medieval quarter.

After picking you up in your hotel, it's time for a 50 min journey to Guimarães, one of the most importante cities in Portugal. Once there, we'll explore the historic center by visiting the castle and a brief visit to the Romanesque church of St. Miguel, where was baptized our first king. A little further down we'll glimpse the Palace of the Dukes of Bragança (optional visit), an imposing building built in the fifteenth century to house the Royal family.

But there's still so much more to discover in our way to the historical center in the lower part of town. This charming old town is a maze of narrow winding streets, flanked by old houses decorated with statues which lead to the impressive Padrão do Salado and to the Nossa Senhora da Oliveira Church then to immediately descend into the outskirts of the ancient city where the weekly fair hapen, today Toural Square.
