The art of surfing has existed for centuries as an integral part of Polynesian culture throughout the pacific islands and plays an important role as a major past time and sport in Hawaii. Although every year thousands of people pick up a board and wade out into the ocean to try their hand riding the waves, it takes most people years of repetition to finally master the practice.
On this 120 minute group lesson, you will learn the basics of surfing with 3-4 others at a prestigious Hawaiian surfing institution founded by pro legend Hans Hedemann. If you don’t have a group, don’t sweat – you’ll be matched with others based off your experience and skill level. The lesson will start on land with a basic safety overview and discussion of general surfing etiquette, followed by 20 minutes of practice on your board before you wade into the surf and try it for real. The point of the lesson is to make sure you are comfortable, knowledgeable, and prepared before attempting to catch your first big wave.
Once in the water, you will learn proper paddling technique, how to turn your board, how to maneuver over waves and how to position yourself to stand up on your board. Your instructor will help you as you get progressively more comfortable on the board until you hit your first waves and cruise back to shore. Like any new sport, it’ll take practice. However, after a 2 hour class with the best instructors on the islands, you’ll be prepared to get out there and start surfing like a pro.
