The Cave of Salamandre is the first cave in Europe to be lit by solar energy. All energy used on site is produced using solar panels integrated into the welcome building, supplying LED lighting.
The architect Jean-Francois Daures conceived the structure of the Cave of Salamandre’s welcome building. He created a reversible construction that creates independent, positive energy. The building is air conditioned by geothermal energy and a vegetal wall that also contributes to the acoustics. It has a prolonged terrace attached to the cliff edge that looks out on to the surrounding forest. Both the terrace and the building are made entirely in wood coming from the local forest.
