The onsite Home Shores Café provides a welcome break after your journey and the On-Board Store offers a range of collectibles and WW1 themed products.Located in the historic Wellington Dominion Museum Building, within the Pukeahu National War Memorial Park, the Exhibition takes a wide look at the Great War - at all forces and all countries involved. The stunning artefacts including a life size tank, a range of replica and genuine guns and over 5000 hand painted miniature figures, depict the trials and horrors of war. The lives and experiences of New Zealanders who served and lived during that time highlight the bravery and enduring spirit which helped shape who the people of New Zealand are today.
The Great War Exhibition brings the ordeals of this pivotal time in history into the modern day, melting away 100 years, helping us to understand the hardships endured by those who served and those who stayed behind.
This exhibition is truly world-class, acclaimed by international visitors and New Zealanders alike. It tells the global story as well as New Zealand’s role in the conflict, highlighting the challenges and triumphs of the Kiwi spirit in times of great adversity.
You will be guided throughout The Great Hall which tells the story of the war from the days of peace in a Belgian Village in mid 1914 through to the war’s end in 1918. Featuring original artefacts from collections in New Zealand and overseas, you are given a glimpse of the grim reality of war.
Visit the ANZ Room – Gallipoli – New Zealand's Story in Colour. The battles at Gallipoli are told through the eyes of New Zealand soldiers who served in this hostile environment. Featuring an extensive collection of colourised photographs and a one hundred square metre diorama of the Gallipoli peninsula, this exhibit features the battle of Chunuk Bair.
