After port pickup in George Town, climb into an open-air 4x4 Land Rover and discover the delights of the western side of Grand Cayman Island. Inside Barker’s National Park, learn from your knowledgeable guide about the nature preserve of 100 acres (40 hectares) near West Bay. As you drive down an isolated expanse of beach, free of high-rises, admire views of thick mangrove forests on one side and the glittering sea on the other.

Disrupt this sense of tranquility with a visit to Hell. From a platform, gaze out onto a spiky terrain of black limestone rock that gave the small coastal town its name. Learn about the geology behind this curious formation, and snap a selfie with the nearby devil statue. Step inside the post office to send a postcard to family and friends stamped from Hell.

Back in the Land Rover, head on to Tortuga Rum Cake Factory, where your guide shares with you its Caribbean origins. Through the large windows of the bakery, you may see cakes being glazed by hand with Tortuga Gold Rum, aged in oak barrels for five years. In the store next door, taste some rum cake and then choose from a mouthwatering variety of flavors — original, chocolate, coconut, Blue Mountain coffee, key lime, banana or pineapple — to purchase and take back with you to the ship.

Enjoy the company of turtles at Cayman Turtle Farm, a research and conservation center. Listen to how the Cayman islands developed in the 17th and 18 centuries from the industry of ‘turtling,’ the fishing of turtles as a source of meat. Making your way through the exhibits, you’ll see old green sea turtles, some weighing more than 500 lbs (226 kg), and yearling turtles, which you can pick up and pet at Turtle Touch Tank.

After a morning of beach, rum cake, turtles and a short stint in Hell, enjoy one last ride in the Land Rover back to George Town port.
