Immerse yourself in Granada’s rich cultural history on this 5.5-hour walking tour. In the morning sightsee with an expert local guide, skipping the lines at the UNESCO-listed Alhambra palace complex and learning about its Moorish history as you tour the lavish palatial buildings and lush Generalife Gardens. Then, in the afternoon meander through the Albaicin neighborhood, a UNESCO World Heritage site, before uncovering Granada’s flamenco heritage in Sacromonte. End your tour with a drink (at your own expense) and a taste of tapas at a typical restaurant.
Meet your guide at the prearranged meeting point in central Granada in the morning, and then head for the city’s most famous monument: the UNESCO-listed Alhambra. Located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, the 13th-century Moorish palace complex is one of the world’s most exquisite examples of Islamic architecture.
As you approach, marvel at the palace’s rose-hued exterior, and take in sweeping views of the city from the complex’s vantage point atop La Sabica hill. Then, with your skip-the-line ticket, bypass the long queues and make your way directly inside.
Follow your guide on a walking tour through the grand courtyards and lavish palatial buildings, and learn how the site was constructed during the Nasrid dynasty as a fortress. Then, visit the beautifully landscaped Generalife Gardens. As you stroll through the ‘gardens of paradise,’ breathe in the fresh air and admire the ornate fountains and vibrant flowerbeds.
After this first part of the tour is finished you will have around 2.5 hours of free time (during the winter season; this can go up to 5.5 hours in the summer season) to enjoy walking around the area and enjoying a local lunch (at your own expense).
Next, meet your guide at the arranged meeting point in the afternoon and continue your second part of the tour on to the UNESCO-listed Albaicin neighborhood. Be transported back in time as you traverse the twisting, medieval streets of Granada’s old Muslim quarter. Gaze at the picturesque white buildings that cascade down the hill, and visit old structures such as Islamic bathhouses (including the original hammam) and Mudejar churches.
Then, make for Sacromonte, a charming residential neighborhood where much of Granada’s gypsy population live. Get a taste of old-world Spain as you wander through the scenic streets of this ancient quarter. Hear how Sacromonte is at the heart of the city’s flamenco scene and see the caves where local zambra (gypsy flamenco) is performed nightly.
Afterward, refuel with a drink (at your own expense) and a tantalizing tapas dish at a typical Albaicin restaurant. Your tour concludes here, and you can continue to explore Granada or make your way back to the city center on your own time.
