At Nesjavellir you will find second largest geothermal power station in Iceland, which serves Reykjavik region with warming water.
From Nesjavellir head to the Thingvellir National park and drive by the side of Thingvallavatn lake which offers spectacular views of landscape. The Thingvellir National park served as parliament ground during many centuries, from the time of early settler Vikings and up to 19th century. In valley at Thingvellir, you will walk along the Almanagja fissure, the place where American and Eurasian tectonic plates diverge and move apart approximately two centimeters per year.
Then drive to Haukadalur, valley of geysers and making short stop on a way at the Lugarvatn lake, known by its hot springs under water near by the shore. Next stop will be at the Haukadalur valley, where the Strokkur geyser erupts every 5-10 minutes into air a mixture of hot water and steam to height up to 30 meters (98 feet), while other hot springs at the area are quiet but colorful.
One of the main attractions on route will be the Gullfoss waterfall with cascades of 11 and 22 meters (36 to 76 feet) of powerful water stream falling into gorge. From Gulfoss go toward to the Friðheimar greenhouse, and make stop on a way at the Faxi waterfall on Tungufljot river. The Friðheimar greenhouse is good example of horticulture in Iceland, it is open for visitors, and you can come and enjoy a unique food experience at the restaurant, with tomatoes growing all around.
One more stop that we do on the way back to Reykjavik at the Kerid crater, 55 meters (180 feet) deep explosion crater filled with water, creating a lake whose steep circular slopes resemble an ancient amphitheater.
