In this great building, a national monument, visitors may behold unique pieces of Baroque and Mannerist art! The Jesuits' College was the scenario of the activity of religious, military and civilian institutions. The building is an architectural mixture resulting from reforms made by each occupant with various details of interest related to the national and international episodes of its history.
One of the most important buildings on the Island of Madeira. It was built out of the island's stone and the first plan of the building was sent to Rome in 1575, to be reviewed and authorized by the authorities of the Society of Jesus.
Beyond the architecture, the College features an impressive collection of furniture and art, most of which originated from the Quinta do Monte, where lived and died Charles of Habsburg, the last emperor of Austria.
