In 2001, approximately one tenth of the entire Douro demarcated region (about 25,000 ha) was classified as World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The Alto Douro wine region has been producing wine for nearly 2,000 years and its main product is Port wine, internationally famous since the 18th century.
This is the oldest demarcated and controlled wine-making region in the world, one that dates back to 1756. The first demarcations are known as 'Pombaline' after the famous Marquis of Pombal.
In high sloped areas and schist and granite based soils, the Douro farmers carved terraces to sustain the soil, giving the region its characteristic look. The unique cultural landscape of the Alto Douro wine region is indeed a combined work of man and nature.
The village of Amarante is well-known by its lovely bridge, church and convent (with the tomb of Blessed Gonçalo), old and tragic floods and delicious local pastries.
