You can still witness the many splendors of these cultures including the Dutch Palace, Jew Street, the Jewish Synagogue, Santa Cruz Basilica, St. Francis Church, the Chinese fishing nets, Maritime Museum and the Hill Palace Museum, all on this fully-guided tour.Your chauffeur will pick you up from your hotel in Kochi at 9:30am, then transfer you to the Mattancherry side of the old city.
Visit the Dutch Palace, also known as Mattancherry Palace or Portuguese Palace ( Closed on Friday). The classic construction is a preserved museum in its own right and houses Kerala murals depicting Hindu temple art, portraits and assorted exhibits of the Kings/Rajas of Kochi. From the Dutch Palace you'll stroll along the historical street, popularly known as Jew Street, which leads you to the Jewish Synagogue. The buildings might seem worn-out, but the street lives on to the glorious past thanks to various spice shops and curio souks. The Jewish Synagogue, or Paradesi Synagogue, is the oldest active synagogue in this part of the world ( Closed on Friday & Saturday). Opened in 1568, its interior holds curved brass columns, an intricately carved teak ark, Belgian crystal chandeliers, Torah crowns of solid gold set with gems, along with Chinese porcelain floors and artifacts.
From here, you will be transferred to the Fort Kochi area and visit the Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica, one of the eight basilicas in India. Counted as one of the heritage edifices of Kerala, this church is one of the finest and most impressive churches with a turbulent history starting from 1505 onward and has weathered the damages of the various battles. You'll also stop by the St. Francis CSI Church. Originally built in 1503, it is the oldest European church in India and has great historical significance as a mute witness to the European colonial struggle in the subcontinent.
Don't leave Kochi without witnessing the Chinese fishing nets that are fixed land installations. Heavy mechanical structures hold out horizontal nets stretching 20m or more across. Each structure is at least 10m high and is comprised of a cantilever with an outstretched net suspended over the sea, and large stones suspended from ropes as counterweights at the other end. Each installation is operated by a team of up to six fishermen. Later visit the Maritime Museum ( Closed on Monday and Public Holidays) and the Hill Palace Museum ( Closed on Monday) which houses the historical storage of artefacts from Kerala.
When the tour ends, you will be dropped off at your hotel in Kochi.
