Full-Day excursion from Rome to Assisi. Admire the magnificence of St. Francis' basilica and its crypt. Excavated between 1818 and 1824 with the mortal remains of the saint costuditi in an urn of rough stone built by Giuseppe Brizzi Assisi fit neo classic and restored in neoclassical architect Ugo Tarceva (1925-32). Above the altar, in the space of the ancient tomb, consists of four rough walls, you see the simple stone urn enclosed by iron bars in two grids, in which was found the body of the saint and which still contains it. In the niches corner lie the remains of four companions of St. Francis Rufino, Angelo, and Masseo Leone. Above is a lamp in bronze and alabaster, offered alternately by the Regions of Italy (1939) to the "patron saint of the Nation Primary."
However, about two years after the death of St. Francis, who already Friar Elia, the successor to the command of the Order, received the gift of a plot of land, out of the western gate of Assisi, a steep rise of Mount Subasio where they hanged criminals and therefore he called the Hill of Hell. On that place already cursed it would sort a very large church that would welcome the body of the great saint.

The Bishopric, where he was a guest of the Archbishop of Assisi, St. Francis had ordered, on a stretcher, the Portiuncula. He died on the ground of his "place" preferred. But the fellow did not keep even one day the body of St. Francis near the church. On the morning of October 4 they brought him back to the city, from San Damiano, because Chiara and her companions he could finally kiss the stigmata.

S. Damiano was taken to bury the Church of St. George, which was located inside the city and in the vicinity of his home. In the church 16 July 1228 Gregory IX proclaimed solemnly the holiness of the great son of Assisi and the next day, invited by Brother Elias, the Pope went on Hill of Hell to bless the first stone of the new large building in honor of the saint.

The May 25, 1230, less than four years after the death of the saint, the lower church was completed and could be brought the body of the saint.
