The total route takes approximately 2 hours: you will take the Vistadome train to Aguas Calientes, which takes about 1.5 hours; and once there, you'll board a coach for a 25-minute ride to Machu Picchu itself.
The "Lost City of the Incas" had lain abandoned for four centuries until American explorer Hiram Bingham happened upon it in 1911. Machu Picchu is believed to have been built in the 1450's by Inca Emperor Pachacuti as a holiday retreat yet within a century the city would be abandoned following the Spanish conquest. The Spaniards never found it so it was spared the destruction they wrought on the Incas sites; instead, it was slowly swallowed up by the jungle and hidden from harm. A guided tour explains the origins behind this awe-inspiring citadel and the most prominent landmarks among the 200 or so buildings such as the monumental Main Square, The royal Quarters, the Temple of the Three Windows, the Circular Towers, the Sacred Sun Dial and the Burial Grounds.
After the guided tour is over, you'll return to Aguas Calientes for lunch at the famous Cafe Inkaterra, a beautiful thatched-roof restaurant hemmed in between the railway and a mountain. After lunch, you'll return to Cusco by train in the afternoon.
Return trips on the Vistadome also offer an on-board fashion show, featuring the exclusive baby alpaca wool collection with the latest trends in alpaca apparel, all available for sale. As an added bonus, you can enjoy live dances inspired by the ancient culture of the Andes. Passengers also receive a snack made from local ingredients, so you can get the full Andean experience through our cuisine. The trip also includes non-alcoholic beverages for your on-board refreshment.
Departures are scheduled every day, with a variety of schedules and frequencies.
