Lamma Island is a paradise just a 30-minute ferry ride from the Central, Hong Kong. The island is physically evenly divided into 2 halves, The northern half is where the majority of the inhabitants live. The village of Yung Shue Wan is regarded as Hong Kong’s expat hippy capital due to the laid back lifestyle, arts and crafts stalls, boutique restaurants and cafes and of course fresh organic foods.
The northern half of Lamma Island is also full of contrasts - the very essence of what makes Hong Kong a unique destination. From ancient fishing villages to modern skyscrapers, plodding sampans to monster container ships, remote white beaches to coal-fired power stations – all within a 4 hour paddle!
Your sea kayak journey will take you from Sok Kwu Wan (Picnic Bay) in the middle of the island, around the northern tip to Yung Shue Wan.
Departing Sok Kwu Wan, you pass through an ancient fishing village and have a close up look at a traditional Hong Kong fish farm. You will spend the morning sea kayaking north up the East Lamma Channel sandwiched between sparsely populated Lamma Island and the contrasting, densely populated Hong Kong Island coastline. Directly ahead, on our left we see small traditional sampans, little coastal villages and the forest clad Lamma Island coast. On our right, only 2000m away, are modern pleasure yachts, huge container ships and the skyrise that is Hong Kong Island.
No matter how many times you see these incredible differences side by side, you can never quite get used to it.
You will have a picnic lunch on a deserted beach at the northern tip of the island before heading west to the northern village of Yang Shu Wan. Here, depending on the individuals in the group, you will have the option of continuing by sea kayak and paddling through the 'monstrous' coal-fired power station that dominates the north-west Lamma Island skyline, or retire to explore the village itself.
The tour finishes here. Ferries depart for Hong Kong Island every 40 minutes so there is plenty of time to relax and enjoy the Bohemian ambiance before heading back to the crowds of the city.
