From one awe inspiring site to the next is how your day starts, unfolds & just keeps going! From pick up at your hotel around 8:30am or the easy meeting point, we head strait to the nearby entrance to the Acropolis passing the theatre of Dionysus, the earliest preserved theater and witness to premiers of some of the most famous writers of the golden age of Greece before coming to the Roman theatre of Herodion, still hosting modern performances. Ascending the ancient stone steps we reach the pinnacle of Greek antiquity, the Parthenon and Erechtheion. With plenty of time to take photos, and contemplate this amazing site we learn about its turbulent history and the mythological struggles of the gods over the name of the city before our descent through the olive trees to find the wide and pretty pedestrianized street of Dionysiou.
Passing the picturesque Neoclassic houses we arrive at the Temple of Zeus and Hadrian’s arch for an insight into the important Roman period of the city and visit the nearby Olympic Stadium before continuing towards the former Royal Palace and National Gardens’, now a green oasis in the busy central area filled with hidden beauty spots which makes this a special place to discover. Emerging at Syntagma Square we see the Greek Parliament building and changing of the National guard before heading along the bustling Ermou street, a pretty shopping hub leading to the famous ‘Plaka’ market, and find the near complete ancient Temple of Hephaestus and the ‘Agora’ which was the market place of the ancient Athenians.
Pausing for lunch with wonderful views to the ancient market site, we discussing how the ancient Greeks would have gathered to trade, exchange news, worship & carry out the street politics of the day. Refreshed, we drive out of the city for around 50 minutes enjoying the Aegean coast line and exploring the beautiful area of Sounion with a guided tour of the breathtaking Temple of Poseidon perched on the shear cliff edge with its open sea views. We learn how the Aegean got its name, the importance of the Temple in Greek history and of previous visitors from Theseus to Lord Byron during his own Grand Tour.
A private tour exclusive to your group allowing flexibility and consideration for the needs of small philosophers & experienced travelers alike, our English speaking driver/guide will take full and special care of you during you trip and provide all the historical, mythological, ancient & modern context along the way to help you make the most of the sites you will visit. Our driver/guide is not allowed by law to accompany you into ticketed sites themselves. We collaborate with guides licensed to enter sites & can provide these if requested.
