The Rose of the North has been the center for the finest handicraft one can find in Thailand. The source of all these pieces of art is often forgotten as the real communities where traditions and techniques to come to these beautiful souvenirs are left aside.
A full day tour that brings you to the communities where artisans, sometimes painstakingly, create decorative items that one only can find at the famed night markets around the kingdom.The tour starts from the Chiang Mai City Arts and Cultural Center, located behind the Three Kings Monument. Transfer from your hotel to the central pick up point is not included. We strongly recommend arriving at the central meeting point before 8:45am and the tour will depart at 9am. As this is a very up and close tour, the maximum group size will never be more than 8 persons.
We first visit the Chiang Mai City Arts and Cultural Center; this is the heart of all activities related to the art and cultural scene in northern Thailand. Our guide will give you an introduction about the history. After an extensive tour, we head to the Puak Tam Community, situated around Puak Tam Temple. It is a community that produces tired umbrella, long-handed ceremonial umbrella, and brassware. These crafts are decorative items made especially for religious services. You observe tiered umbrella production at one of the artisan’s houses as well get up and close with producing long brass fingernails for Thai Traditional Dance performances.
We will continue to the Muen Sarn Community. This community has been recognized as the village where talented silversmiths from the old Lanna period for more than 2 centuries perform their unique skills of making silverware have been passed on generation to generation till today. Explore the community by foot to see lifestyles of the locals and see artisans making silverware in their house.
Before we explore the Nantaram community, we are warmly welcomed by a local family for a very local, yet delicious lunch.
After lunch, we head into the community. The local artisan group “Professional Lacquer-ware Group of Nantaram” situated inside Nantaram Temple will have tales and stories aplenty about the community and how the group came about as well as their missions. One thing you will learn is the protection of their traditional wisdom and craftsmanship that has been inherited form their Tai Khern ancestor. At this time, you are welcome to join the group and get your hands on creating your own lacquerware. Basic techniques will be used and you can bring your own creation home as a souvenir.
At around 3pm, we will head back to the Chiang Mai City Arts and Cultural Center as the final stop of this day. The transfer from the Chiang Mai City Arts and Cultural Center to your hotel in Chiang Mai is not included.
