Get a 360 degree view of how this architectural marvel and its beautiful works of art came into being; all with the help of one of our expert, English speaking guides.
You’ll start at the recently re-opened Duomo Museum (Museo dell’Opera del Duomo), a vast, but carefully curated storehouse that holds many of the greatest treasures associated with the Duomo. These include the original ‘Gates of Paradise’ Baptistery door (the one you see on the baptistery today is actually a copy), Michelangelo’s other Pietá which the great artist designed for his own tomb, Donatello’s eerily realistic sculpture the Penitent Magdalene, beautiful scale models of Brunelleschi’s world-changing dome, and the entire original facade of the church, reconstructed for the first time since its demolition in the 19th century.
You’ll visit the baptistery, one of the oldest buildings in Florence, and learn about the influence it has on Italian architecture as a whole. After checking out the replicas of the famous bronze relief doors by Alfonso Pisano and Lorenzo Ghiberti, you’ll go past the tourist crowds for an intimate look inside the iconic building. Under the beautiful mosaic-covered dome you’ll see where generations of famous Florentines like Dante and the Medici family were baptized during the heydays of the great city.
Finally you’ll head to the Duomo itself to experience its jaw-dropping interior. You’ll also descend into the crypt, which most tourists never see, and pay your respects at the tomb of Filippo Brunelleschi, the man whose architectural genius is behind the giant dome.
At the end of the tour your guide will give you all-inclusive tickets to climb to the top of the dome and the Bell Tower, which offers the finest views in all of Florence. You will have 24 hours to use the ticket. If you don’t want to wait in the often long afternoon lines, bring it back early the next morning to experience Florence’s most popular site.
