Begin your journey as you’ll travel south on the slopes of Hualalai and Mauna Loa volcanoes. You’ll view several historical lava flows as we drive into Ka‘u country, the south part of the island. You will enjoy a fabulous lunch at Punalu’u Bake Shop & Visitor Center. After lunch, your first stop is the most famous black sand beach in Hawai’i. You will have an excellent chance of viewing sea turtles resting on the black sand. Your next stop will be the Ka‘u Coffee Mill. Our guide will take you on an interesting personal walking tour of coffee fields and the processing facilities. Learn about each stage of coffee production and sample some of the best coffee and macadamia nuts produced on the Big Island.
Your final destination is the highlight of this adventure where you will be in the summit of Kilauea inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (HVNP). Your tour guide is certified ranger trained. They will lead you to the essential “must see” gems in the park fully narrating the flora, fauna, geology, and cultural awareness with myth and legend stories that tie in the history of the past eruptions. While in the park, expect to see the summit caldera, steam vents, rainforest, lava tube and cinder fields.
You will break for a delicious dinner in or near the park and your guide will assess the current eruption conditions for the best night viewing. Usually, we’ll head to the Jaggar Museum to witness the red glow of the molten lava in a hidden lake inside the Halemaumau Crater.
On our return trip back to your hotel, you will pass between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa through the Saddle Road depending on the weather. Sometimes the weather makes the group take a south route back to the hotels. If viewing conditions are clear, we may stop for a few minutes to stargaze. The Big Island of Hawaii is truly one of the most spectacular stargazing locations in the world.
