Located at the far Western end of Hong Kong Island, easily taking public transportation like bus or tram from the downtown area. Kennedy Town was the city’s underbelly for many years, home to the slaughterhouse, the contagious diseases hospital, the public mortuary, the docks, and a population of Hong Kong’s working class. You will see another side of Hong Kong from here.
The hospital and slaughterhouse are no longer operating anymore like long time ago (though there are left docks nearby, have fun to walk on them) and now that the new MTR train is up and running, Kennedy Town’s only a few short minutes away from the downtown area. Its relaxed, village like atmosphere, the streets and terraces filled with tenements, and its magnificent location right on the edge of Victoria Harbour are making Kennedy Town the Hong Kong neighborhood of the moment.
Kennedy Town’s long relative isolation means that it still has lots of things absent from the more developed parts of Hong Kong: quirky walk-up and wrap-around corner buildings, street food hawkers, public housing estates, century old banyan trees, and other visible markers of the city’s 175 year old history. You will walk around in this tour and experience the atmosphere. It’s a wonderful place to feel what Hong Kong used to be like, and get a sense of where it's going to be.
Some attractions you will visit are like: Lo Pan, God of Carpenters and Contractors, which is at Hong Kong’s most drop-dead gorgeous hidden Chinese temple.
In addition, this tour will let you taste some fresh, baked on premises egg tarts and buns, which are getting harder to find in Hong Kong. This tour also include a sunset draft beer or glass of house wine at a lovely waterfront cafe.
This tour is also great for expats who want to get a bead on how to really enjoy all the cultural treasures that Hong Kong has to offer.
