Make your own way to the tiny fishing village of Qantab near Muscat and the Bait al Bilad (The Village House) restaurant. Set in a restored village house, this enchanting restaurant fronts the beach and offers an authentic Omani dining experience, complete with a cushion-strewn majlis (seating area), courtyard and lantern-lit roof terrace that offers magical views over the sea and mountains.
Head inside the sensitively restored house and soak up the traditional Omani atmosphere. If you arrive early enough, visit the kitchen to see the chefs make rokhai, a paper-thin crispbread that features in home-cooked Omani meals. Admire the chefs' dexterity and perhaps have a go yourself, although be warned — you’ll need heatproof hands!
Sit in the softly lit courtyard and feast on the homespun cuisine with a 3-course set menu made from the freshest ingredients and prepared with the sense of tradition that can only come from local, family cooks. Savor dishes such as kabuli and marak samak, and enjoy complimentary fruit juice or water with your meal.
Finish your meal with kahwa (Omani coffee) and perhaps retire to the rooftop terrace. Admire the views and chat over what it might be like to live in this sleepy village before saying goodbye and returning to your hotel independently.
