During this 10 day festival, local families and social communities install idols of the deity in their homes and get together to erect Pandals (tents) in which huge statues of Lord Ganesh are kept and prayers are conducted. In the company of your expert local guide visit three of Mumbai’s most famous Pandals and learn from him the history and stories behind them.
First visit the Fort Cha Raja Pandal, located near the General Post Office, which is renowned for its beautiful flower decoration and gigantic Ganesh Idol. Observe hundreds of devotees as they visit the Pandal for the glimpse of Lord Ganesh and his blessings. Proceed to visit a traditional Maharastrian family and witness the ceremony where they bring home a small Ganesh idol amidst chanting of mantras and special rituals. Interact with the family members and learn from them about Marathi customs and culture.
Stopover at a local restaurant for lunch and devour the flavors of the city. From here, proceed with your guide to Mazgoan cha Raja Pandal and catch the breath taking view of Ganesh idol amidst twinkling of lights. Next stop is Khetwadi 12 lane, the last and most exciting of all the three Pandals.
Now drive to Girgaon Chawpatty to witness the Ganesh Visajana ceremony whereby the gigantic idols are brought down from thousands of Pandals (tents) and carried to the sea by devotees singing and dancing all along. As the tour ends here, the cultural shock will leave you wanting for more, making you instantly fall in love with Mumbai.
