Find your way to TaipeiEYE, the theater where Taipei’s traditional Chinese Opera and other local performing arts take place. Marvel at the visual decor as you scan photos of costumed performers as well as puppets and other props used.
Before the show starts, you can mingle with the performing artists in the foyer. If you arrive just in time for the show, head to your seat for a 90-minute spectacle featuring music, dance, and acrobatics. During intermission, you get another chance to meet with the performers.
After the show, you’re taken to meet with one of Taipei’s most esteemed professional makeup artists for your 2-hour session. Try on different face paint, elaborate hair pieces and silk strands, and then slip into traditional costume to get the full look — just like real actors of the Chinese Opera.
Learn about the origins of operatic makeup, a reference to an era when leading actors wore masks. Watch with awe as you’re transformed and your facial expressions are enhanced in symbolic colors to represent essential characters. Then take advantage of great photo ops to capture a memorable experience.
TaipeiEYE offers a selection of programs, depending on the season. In addition to traditional opera that incorporates martial arts and puppetry, the show may include folklore, folk music, and Taiwanese aboriginal dance and music. (See details in Itinerary for show descriptions.)
