Your day’s itinerary includes only brief stops for you to buy refreshments (own expense), so you may want to bring some food and drinks with you.
Your first stop at Borgarfjörður is at Deildartunguhver, one of Europe’s most powerful hot springs. See the water bubbling from its rocky cracks, and then travel along the highland pass of Kaldidalur, where black sands, mountains and glacier fields make up the landscape.
On arrival at the Jaki glacier, transfer to a monster 8-wheel truck to drive to Langjökull, Iceland’s second-largest glacier. Hold on tight as you travel over the ice to Langjökull’s man-made cave, set high on the glacier and made of tunnels dug into the ice cap.
Leave the truck and enter the cave with your guide. Walk along the ice corridors and ogle the intensifying, luminous blues of the ice as you go deeper into the 1,650-foot (500-meter) network. Cross an ice crevasse by bridge and learn about the glacier’s formation from your guide.
After around an hour, step back into the daylight and begin your evening tour of the Golden Circle by coach. The first stop on your list is UNESCO-listed Thingvellir National Park, the age-old location of Iceland’s 1st-century parliament. See the parliament site and then stride along the incredible tectonic rift, where the Eurasian and North American plates flank a fissure.
Continue to the spectacular waterfall of Gullfoss. Admire the famous double cascades and then head to the Geysir geothermal region. After viewing the bubbling hot springs and boiling geysers, return to Reykjavik. Your tour then ends with a late-evening hotel drop-off.
