Brunel's ss Britain entrance ticket allows you to explore cabins, saloons and access all areas of the ship to take in the sights, sounds and smells of a Victorian voyage. Climb the rigging, dress up in Victorian costumes and see a working replica of the engine. Head below the ship where desert-like conditions preserve the hull. Don’t miss the Dockyard Museum which takes visitors through a million miles spent at sea and 170 years of fascinating adventure.
Travel independently to Brunel’s ss Great Britain situated on Bristol’s harbourside and boasting one of the most impressive views in the region. The friendly staff will be happy to welcome you and do everything to ensure you enjoy your visit and don’t have to wait in long queues. At our visitor services centre your will be able to purchase a dockyard companion which will give you more information about your visitor experience and the ss Great Britain’s fascinating history.
Descend ‘under water’ in the Dry Dock to see the spectacular sights of the ship’s bow and propeller. Standing on the dock floor you will see how corrosion has affected the ship and the high-tec glass ‘sea’ now protecting the oldest iron hull in the world. Follow this with a visit to the Dockyard Museum where you can view archive film footage which captures the excitement and emotion of the ss Great Britain’s homecoming. Here you can also take the time to discover the highs and lows of the ship’s dramatic history, from Brunel’s original vision to her final homecoming.
After this, climb on board the ship and experience life as a Victorian with your choice of audio companion included in the price of your ticket. Explore the Weather Deck, which looks much as it did in 1845, when the very first excited passengers boarded for their voyage to New York. Below deck explore cabins, galleys, stores and access all areas of the ship to take in the sights, sounds and smells of a Victorian voyage. Compare the luxury of the First Class Dining Saloon with the privations of a voyage in Steerage. You can also visit the powerhouse at the heart of the ship – an astounding recreation of Brunel’s original engine. If you explore all areas of the ship at your leisure your visit should take around 3 hours.
