Colombian emeralds are unique around the world because of the quality and deep colour of the crystals. In this tour you will learn about the history of the emeralds, where and how they are found, how they are processed and sold in the market.
The tour will start by going into one of the exposition rooms of the Gold Museum where you will be contextualized on the first discoveries and uses of the emerald in the indigenous tribes of the precolonial period. As we exit the Gold Museum we will tell you about the history of the jewel during the colonial and independence periods while we visit two of the churches within the square of Santander.
In the next part of the tour we will go inside the Emerald Museum where you will learn about the main mines in Boyacá and the exploitation methods used in modern times to extract the jewel. We will also learn about the social difficulties of the region and how the emerald is commercialized now a days.
Once we go outside the Emerald Museum we will visit the informal and formal markets of emeralds in the downtown area and we will finish by doing an emerald workshop.
